Came and got egg tart, ate it while it was still warm. Wow what a bite! The pastry was so flaky and crisp, and the custard part of it blends so well with the pastry. Probably should have gotten some other things to try too -- maybe next trip! They have a fancy machine that ties red string around the box, which is apparently from the 70s! Very cool to watch
If I'm in the Oakland area, this is my go to for Chinese egg custard tarts. They are no golden gate bakery, but pretty good and cheaper. It's a normal Chinese bakery otherwise so just grab and go.
My go-to spot for Chinese baked goods in Oakland Chinatown. Great birthday cakes - you can custom order, just place your order at least a day ahead. Their egg tarts and pork buns are delicious, and my favorites include the lemon-flavored bird's nest pastry and swiss rolls. PS: the homeless dude out front is generally harmless, and don't be surprised by the group of OG Chinese men monopolizing all the tables inside the bakery -- do plan on taking your goods to-go.
Ruby King Bakery is our favorite bakery for egg tarts in the Bay Area! Flakey crust with soft egg custard inside. It's not too sweet and the price is very affordable! Other buns are good as well! Service is good! Highly recommend this bakery!
I heard that the egg tarts were really good, so I made a note to stop by while in Oakland Chinatown. There was no line when I went, and they had plenty of baked goods available. Cash only! Egg tart ($1.50) +Warm, flaky crust: I heard an audible crunch as a took my first bite, and that definitely wasn't my last! +Custard was creamy, eggy, and not sweet. *Verdict: 4.5 stars rounded down to 4. Service left a lot to be desired as the cashier rudely commented "That's it?" when I just ordered an egg tart. However, that won't stop me from returning for a fresh egg tart if I'm ever in Oakland Chinatown again!
I come here for the egg tarts and cocktail buns! I definitely recommend coming in the morning or on a weekend when they have more business so the pastries come out hot and fresh. They are very fast and if there's a line it moves quickly. I recommend paying in cash. Also, there is space for seating inside. Egg Tart * The best I've had in the Bay Area * Always hot, fresh, crispy and flaky exterior * Only $1.50 compared to some of it more expensive competitors Cocktail Bun * Hot, fresh * Good ratio between bread and filling * Buttery and great texture
4.5 stars rounded up to 5. Okay. If you are following, I met with my friends from the past at Hashi Gawa the other night and they encouraged me to get my egg tarts from here rather than from Napoleon, where I am a regular customer; see all my other reviews. Quality/Quantity - 6 egg tarts, see pictures. Good size and quality. Wife really liked it, daughter prefers their competitor. Atmosphere - Decent size location. Plenty of indoor seating. Actually fairly busy. Many people (of the older generation) was hanging out, drinking coffee, & eating pastries. Street parking only, or nearby garages. Open 6 days a week from 7am to 5pm, closed Tuesdays. They used to be open 7 days a week, glad they are now taking a day off. Such hard workers. Service - Good, two employees at the front of the house. Very efficient, welcoming, and nice. Price - $1.50 each; $9 total. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since like forever. We might be regular customers now.
We had the beef, curry, puff, and egg tarts, I am so happy this place is far from my home because I would literally be here every week! Absolutely addicting everything tastes so fresh! Their service was super fast and friendly. These ladies know what they're doing. And the ambience is seriously like a little hole in the wall! Not much going on, but it's definitely not needed because this place is a true gem!
Located in the heart of Chinatown. Ambiance: Step into Ruby King Bakery, and you're greeted with the warm, comforting aroma of freshly baked goods. The cozy atmosphere is reminiscent of traditional Chinese bakeries, complete with a friendly staff who make you feel right at home. Pastries and Breads: The star of the show is undoubtedly their egg tarts. With a flaky crust and a perfectly balanced custard filling, these tarts are a hit among locals and visitors alike. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned egg tart connoisseur, Ruby King's version is bound to impress. And let's not forget their Hong Kong-style cakes--light, airy sponge cakes filled with fresh fruit and cream that are just the right amount of sweet. I was not a huge fan of the curry buns though, because I personally like them crispier and flakier. Please try the taro buns though, I always get the taro bunnnnns yum. Cakes: Ordered the Ube fruit cream cake, called ahead of time to reserve it for pick-up on the birth date. The ube cream flavor was strong and the cake came with plenty of fruits and some pieces of chocolate on top. Ube fruit cream cake was definitely a pleasure to try, but I prefer the classic fruit cream cake much more!
